What is a marriage biodata in English?
A marriage biodata in English is a one-page profile that a family shares before a first meeting. It lists personal details, education, job and family. It also says what the person wants in a partner. You may also see it called a bio data for marriage.
The word biodata is short for biographical data. See the general reference on biodata for its wider uses. A job biodata or resume is a different document. It is written for an employer. This guide is only about the marriage biodata. For a community-specific format, see the boy marriage biodata format or the biodata format for marriage for girl.
At a glance
- Keep it to one page, with five groups: personal, education and job, family, partner preferences and contact.
- Gotra, rashi and Manglik status are optional. Add them only if your family uses them.
- Write only true details, in one date format and one height format.
- Free Word samples are below. The maker downloads PDF, JPG and PNG, and the price is shown first.
How we wrote this guide: we analyzed the pages that rank on the first page of Google India for these searches on 3 November 2026. We noted the questions they answer and the ones they leave out.

What should you write in each section of a biodata for marriage in English?
Most biodatas have the same five groups of details. For each field, you get a short rule and an example. If a term such as gotra is new to you, a general reference can help, but follow your own family's practice. For a wider walkthrough, read how to write a biodata for marriage.
What a full biodata asks for: 27 fields in four groups
We counted the fields in our own maker form on 3 November 2026. It has 27 fields: 13 personal details, 4 for education and job, 7 for family and 3 for contact. The 13 personal fields include 4 horoscope fields: gotra, rashi, nakshatra and Manglik status. Gather these details before you start, so the form is quick to fill in.

What should an English biodata for NRI and overseas families include?
If you are making a biodata for marriage in English from abroad, families in India will want a few more facts. Add these lines to the usual sections.
Current country and city
For example, Toronto, Canada. This tells families where you live today.
Citizenship or visa status
Write it plainly. For example: Indian citizen on a work visa.
Work and company type
A job title and the industry are enough. Income can be a range.
Willingness to relocate
Say if you would move, or if you want a partner who can join you.
Contact and time
Give a phone number with the country code and a time that suits families in India.
English or your own language?
Choose English when the families live in different states or countries. Choose it too when both sides read English well. Choose your own language when older relatives will read the biodata first. Many families keep both versions ready.
If you want a regional version, use one of these pages:

What are the do's and don'ts of an English biodata, and how do you share it safely?
| Tip | Why |
|---|---|
| Keep it to one page | A short biodata is read to the end. A long one is skipped. |
| State only what is true | Families check the facts. Honesty builds trust. |
| Use one date format and one height format | Mixed formats look careless and are hard to read. |
| Leave out ID numbers and the full home address | Give a parent's phone number and your city instead. |
| Do not write a long list of demands | Two or three short lines on partner preferences are enough. |
| Read it once more before you share it | Check names, dates and phone numbers. Then send a PDF or one clear image. |
Share the biodata only with people you know. You can send the photo later if you prefer. If your biodata or photo is ever misused, you can report it on the national cybercrime reporting portal. More on this in why biodatas fail to get responses.
